Current Practice
Helen-Anne MacAlister is an Associate within our Employment & Industrial Law Group.  Her expertise covers all aspects of Employment & Industrial Law, including Workplace Health & Safety.


Professional Experience
Helen-Anne undertook her undergraduate studies in Scotland and upon completion of her studies, practised law for four years in Scotland working in both Edinburgh and Glasgow. During this time Helen-Anne gained substantial experience in the areas of contract and employment law providing Senior Management and HR professionals with support and advice. Helen-Anne was involved in consulting with clients and introducing policies consistent with new legislation and their core businesses. She obtained extensive experience in employment law litigation and conducted cases in both Tribunals and Courts relating to a broad range of workplace issues.

Upon moving to Australia in 2000, Helen-Anne, whilst requalifying in NSW, was employed as a Managing Consultant with a well known HR support firm providing advice in relation to outplacement of staff and the organisation of programs for executive and graduate recruitment.  Whilst in this role, Helen-Anne, was actively involved in assisting clients identify competency based personnel needs, conducting client training and implementing recruitment methodologies, further adding to her business acumen and commercial experience. 

Helen-Anne joined Carroll & O'Dea in 2003 and became an Associate in 2004. She advises a wide range of corporate clients, government bodies, not for profit organisations, unions and individuals on all aspects of employment law, workplace safety and workplace relations. She has wide ranging experience in both contentious and non-contentious matters developing strategies to enhance long term employee relations and minimise risk exposure.  She provides advice on discrimination, disciplinary matters, unfair dismissals, adverse actions, employment contracts, workplace investigations, union disputes and workplace safety matters. 
Helen-Anne was admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of NSW in 2002 and is a Solicitor of the High Court of Australia. 

Professional Background
Helen-Anne holds a Bachelor of Laws and a Diploma in Legal Practice from the University of Edinburgh and a Bachelor of Arts, Commerce (Honours) from Napier University, Edinburgh.  Helen-Anne undertook her Australian training at the University of Sydney.  She was admitted as a Solicitor in Scotland in 1997 and as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of New South Wales in 2002.  She is a Solicitor of the High Court of Australia and in 2009 Helen-Anne was admitted as a Solicitor in England and Wales.
