Peter has practised continuously in the field of
employment and industrial relations law for over 25 years and is
well known to the profession and in the industrial relations field.
His achievements in the field of employment and industrial relations
law are numerous. They include:
Ø
Senior Partner of the EIR Division
at Carroll and O’Dea.
Ø
A NSW Law Society Accredited
Specialist in employment and industrial law since 1994, the year the
Accredited Specialty Scheme was introduced by the Law Society.
Ø
Member of the Accredited
Specialist’s Advisory Committee, which assesses applicants to the
Scheme, between 1994 and 2008. He chaired that committee from 1999
to 2004.
Ø
Inclusion in Legal Who's Who in
Australia, the publication which highlights the pre-eminent
practitioners in each speciality of the law, as nominated by those
in the profession.
Ø
Foundation member of the
Australian Labour Law Association and a member of its National
Committee.
Ø
Author/Editor/Contributor to a
number of books on employment and industrial law including
Australian Industrial Law, the Master Workplace Relations Guide and
the Australian Labour Law Reporter.
His expertise covers all aspects of employment and
industrial relations law, including unfair dismissal, drafting and
interpreting employment contracts, industrial disputes, award and
agreement interpretation and enforcement, enterprise bargaining,
discrimination in employment and occupational health and safety.
Over the course of his career, he has acted for and advised all of
the “stakeholders” in industrial relations – employers,
employees, unions, employer organisations, government and not for
profit organisations. Peter’s approach is to assist our clients
find practical, cost effective solutions to their problems, avoiding
litigation unless absolutely necessary.
Since joining Carroll & O'Dea, he has been involved in a
number of major test cases, including Byrne & Frew v Australian Airlines Limited (High Court of
Australia), Cukeric v David
Jones Limited (Full Bench, Industrial Relations Commission of
New South Wales in Court Session) , Webb's
case (Full Bench, Australian Industrial Relations Commission).
Peter has a Bachelor of Arts and
Bachelor of Laws degrees from the University of NSW
and a Master
of Laws (Honours) from the University of Sydney. He was
admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of NSW in 1982 and a
solicitor of the High Court of Australia in 1988. He joined the firm in 1983 and became a
partner in 1988.
