We are very honoured to have former High Court Justice Virginia Bell AC joining us to mark International Women’s Day 2024, and she will be reflecting on the changes she has observed over the course of her professional life for female practitioners. The UN Women’s theme for IWD 2024 is #CountHerIn, this theme examines the pathways to greater economic inclusion for women and girls everywhere.
About the speaker
Virginia Bell served on the High Court of Australia from February 2009 until her retirement in March 2021.
At the date of her appointment, she was a judge of the Court of Appeal of the Supreme Court of New South Wales. Prior to this she served as a judge of the Supreme Court’s Common Law Division for nine years. She was President of the Australasian Institute of Judicial Administration between 2006 and 2008.
In 2012, she was made a Companion of the Order of Australia for eminent service to the judiciary and as an advocate for the economically and socially disadvantaged. In 2022 she conducted an Inquiry for the Commonwealth into the former prime minister’s appointment to administer multiple departments of state.
