The book covers Maithri’s early days and tertiary education in Sri Lanka, his move to Australia and his early work in Dubbo for the Western Aboriginal Legal Service which laid the foundation for his historic legal advocacy for members of the Stolen Generations and securing compensation for their forced removal.
Also we hear about Maithri’s decision to return to Sydney from Dubbo and joining Carroll & O’Dea Lawyers where he has had a stellar career spanning over 30 years.
His work with Indigenous Australians led to the landmark 1995 case where Maithri secured the first compensation victory for families of death in custody victims in NSW.
Managing Partner Hanaan Indari writes in the book:
“What Australian legal history remembers as a landmark decision has afforded the Indigenous Australian community of today the power to exercise their legal rights in challenging Government, and the hope of compensation, victory and justice”.
Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC KC, Governor of New South Wales, will speak at the launch of “Pursuing a Vision of Justice” at NSW Parliament House on the 30th September 2022.
