Employment and Religious Freedoms

The intersection between religion and employment is complex and brings with it many challenges. David Ford’s paper Employment and Religious Freedoms, presented at a Law of Religious Institutions Conference on 15 September 2020, considers a number of issues religious institutions need to deal with when employing and managing staff, including:
- Faith as a key selection criterion for appointment and how the exemptions in anti-discrimination law apply.
- Employment contracts, codes of conduct and statement of faith statements.
- Holding views contrary to the employer’s beliefs and ethos and sharing them outside the workplace, including on social media.
