Matthew is part of the Carroll & O’Dea Lawyers’ property team, which provides a comprehensive transaction and advice service across the eastern states of Australia on all property law matters.
Matthew advises clients on all kinds of property transactions, including commercial and retail leasing, transfers and developments, as well as advice regarding lease disputes and transaction structures. Matthew has many years’ experience negotiating complex legal documents while ensuring he remains focused on his client’s commercial objectives.
Matthew provides expert advice on retail and commercial leasing matters including initial advice during the commercial negotiation for the new lease, drafting, negotiating and completing formal documentation, and, if necessary, dispute resolution.
Matthew acts for major retail and commercial property management corporations, advising on all aspects of retail and commercial leasing transactions, shopping centre redevelopment, land title office issues, retail legislation and corporations law.
Matthew also assists clients in the not-for-profit space, advising in relation to property development and transactions as well as advising about association constitution and incorporation matters. This includes property and governance matters for schools, sports clubs, universities and not-for profit organisations.
Matthew presents seminars on property law topics for clients and industry groups. These seminars can relate to core property law topics, the retail leases Acts across all Australian jurisdictions, and issues associated with property law including corporations, privacy and consumer law issues.
Matthew reviews new caselaw and legislation relating to the property industry, frequently writing articles about changes and developments in law that impact on property management and business.
Matthew is an active member of the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust Community Advisory Committee and the Property Council of Australia Academy, Retail Property Committee.
Matthew is based in Carroll & O’Dea’s Sydney office, located on the lands of the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation. Matthew acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the land on which we work and pays respects to the Elders past and present.
Key Professional Achievements
- Matthew obtained his law degree from the University of NSW and also has tertiary qualifications in science and philosophy.
- Matthew was admitted as a solicitor in NSW in 2007 and joined Carroll & O’Dea Lawyers in the same year.
- Matthew was made an Associate in November 2009 and a Partner in 2015.
