On 22 August 2023 it was announced that Justice Stephen Gageler AC has been appointed the fourteenth Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia. Justice Gageler commences as Chief Justice on 6 November 2023 following retirement of Chief Justice Susan Kiefel AC.

Justice Robert Beech-Jones has been appointed to the High Court of Australia. Justice Beech-Jones will fill the position created following appointment of Justice Gageler as Chief Justice and will also commence on 6 November 2023.

Justice Beech-Jones served on the Supreme Court of New South Wales since 2012. In 2021 he was appointed Chief Judge of the Common Law Division of the Supreme Court of New South Wales and a Judge of Appeal.

As a result of the new appointments, the justices of the High Court from 6 November will be:

  • Justice Gaegler AC
  • Justice Gordon AC
  • Justice Edelman
  • Justice Steward
  • Justice Gleeson
  • Justice Jagot
  • Justice Beech-Jones
