Cyber risk

2025 has seen the continued success of cyber criminals. Thankfully many organisations and private individuals are taking regular training in how to recognise scams, phishing, fake identities and other malware.

For charities, the donor data held, yields immediate rewards, if stolen: not only would names and addresses and contact details be plundered, but perhaps also bank account credentials.

Notwithstanding the cost of engaging cyber protection, all charities handling personal information, should aspire to meeting the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) set of eight core mitigation strategies. See them here.

These mitigation strategies could represent a saving of

  • $56,600 for small entities;
  • $97,200 for medium entities; and
  • $202,700 for large entities;

as the figures are the average cost of cyber incidents per self-report to the ACSC (Annual Cyber Threat Report 2024-25 by ACSC).
